Beyonce added to star-studded Disney Lion King cast
GRAMMY-winning pop sensation Beyonce Knowles-Carter has confirmed she will play Nala in Disney's The Lion King remake.
In a Facebook post last night (Wednesday Nov 1) she shared a picture of the new film's cast with the caption: "#TheLionKing. 2019."
Beyonce joins an A-List cast featuring Donald Glover as Simba, Chiwetel Ejiofor with big shoes to fill as Scar, and brilliantly, James Earl Jones reprising the role no one else could voice - Mufasa.
Other actors include Alfre Woodard (Sarabi) John Kani (Rafiki) Eric Andre (Azizi) and Keegan-Michael Key (Kamari).
Young up-and-comers JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph who will play young Simba and Nala respectively.
In a stark contrast to the original, the film will feature a majority black cast - with the only white cast members confirmed as Seth Rogan and Billy Eichner as the beloved comedy duo Timon & Pumba along with British TV host John Oliver will play disciplinarian bird Zazu, originally voiced by Rowan Atkinson.
Industry whitewashing has been a hot topic since the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite demanded change.
A number of actors boycotted the Oscars in 2016 after exclusively white actors were nominated for a second year in a row.
The hashtag and boycott may have played a role in Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Fences being nominated at this year's Academy Awards so it’s great to see change taking place and more and more black actors getting the roles they deserve.
Jon Favreau is on board to direct The Lion King, after successfully adapting The Jungle Book two years ago, earning the studio over $900m (£680m).
While little is known about the soundtrack, if The Jungle Book is anything to go by, we can expect some reworked version of Circle of Life, I just Can’t Wait to Be King and Hakuna Matata at the very least.Tags:
