'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' aiming for Broadway success
A STAGE musical adaptation of hit movie Moulin Rouge is set to play next summer, with Broadway in its sights.
'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' will be staged at the newly refurbished Emerson Colonial Theater in Boston, US.
Performances will kick off in late June 2018 with Tony-winner John Logan writing the musical's book using songs from the film along with some new additions.
It will be based on Australian director Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor which featured a megamix of pop music favourites including 'Roxanne' by The Police, 'Nature Boy' originally sung by Nat King Cole and Madonna's 'Like a Virgin'.
'Moulin Rouge' follows a doomed love affair between writer, Christian, and dancer, Satine, at the Moulin Rouge cabaret Hall in Montmartre, Paris, in 1899.
Two-time Tony nominee Alex Timbers ('Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson', 'Peter and the Starcatcher') is directing.
Carmen Pavlovic of Global Creatures – an Australian animatronic show company – will produce the musical.
Global Creatures previously teamed up with Luhrmann's production company Bazmark to adapt his 1992 hit film 'Strictly Ballroom'.
Other productions include 'How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular', 'King Kong' – set to open at the Broadway Theatre in Autumn 2018 – and a co-production of 'War Horse' for the National Theatre, UK, in 2013.
Moulin Rouge was made on a budget of $52million (£39.6m) and made $179million (£136m) at the box office.
The Emerson Colonial Theater staged former pre-Broadway successes including 'Porgy and Bess,' 'Oklahoma!,' 'Annie Get Your Gun,' 'Follies,' and 'Anything Goes.'
The venue was renovated by Ambassador Theatre Group who own world-famous venues such as the Lyric and Hudson on Broadway and the Lyceum, Apollo, Phoenix and Duke of York's on the West End.Tags:
