  • Project Details
Remembering Ada Salter is an independent docu-drama film about the life and legacy of Ada Salter (1866-1942) currently in full swing in the production stage. At the age of 29, Ada went to work with the poor in the abysmal slums of Bermondsey in London. In 1901, she married Dr Alfred Salter who provided free medical care for the poor. They remained working in Bermondsey until their house was bombed in 1941. In the forty years Ada lived in Bermondsey she rose from being a social worker at the Bermondsey Settlement to becoming a fearless, outspoken politician. In 1909, she was elected to the Bermondsey Council becoming one of the first female councillors in London, and in 1922 she became Mayor of Bermondsey, the first female Mayor of a London borough. A lifelong pacifist, she was one of the founders of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She was a trade unionist working with women factory workers, a social housing pioneer, and one of the most outstanding environmentalists of her time, organising the planting of over 9,000 trees and over 40,000 flowers and plants to bring colour into people's lives and purify the borough's heavily polluted air. In 1910, her eight-year-old daughter died. The sadness never left Ada, but experiencing firsthand the pain so many poor women lived with, reinforced her already ardent resolve to fight against poverty and improve women's lives. She forged ahead with unerring determination to achieve her dreams for Bermondsey; she displayed an extraordinary strength of character and a firm, calm manner in dealing with her political allies and opponents.
