    Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date, subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.A Photo Editor should possess a creative eye, an elevated aesthetic, sharp technical skills and sound journalistic judgment to join a team creating and sourcing photographs for news, features and enterprise stories for on- and off-platform publishing.The primary duties of the job are to conceptualize and assign photography for the New York Times’ International report, and to select and publish images for multiple platforms of The New York Times. The editor will assign and research a wide array of news and feature photographs, working productively with staff photographers, freelance photographers, wire services, agencies and all other sources of pictures, as well as editors, designers, and reporters in the newsroom.The ideal candidate should have a strong demonstrable passion for photography, journalism and visual storytelling of all kinds, and should possess a broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape. He/she/they must be a team player and a good communicator, and must initiate and develop ideas for pictures and picture stories. Candidates should be comfortable with change and be able to work well in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. Excellent news judgment, and a firm sense of journalistic ethics are both essential, as is knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues.This is not an imaging or re-touching job, however familiarity with electronic image handling is required. The candidate should possess exceptional technical skills, including proficiency in Photoshop and other image handling software, and a facility for learning new technology. This position is based in our London newsroom and may require night and weekend hours.What You’ll Do:Conceive of, pitch, develop, edit, pace and build powerful and innovative visual stories with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom.Maintain the highest standard of photography assigning for feature, news and enterprise stories for all platforms including mobile, print and social.Collaborate with writers, reporters, editors and photographers to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.Demonstrate strong editorial judgment, working with Times editors and legal department for all vetting, copyright, legal and ethical questions.Focus on working with a diverse range of subjects and photographers, identifying new talent and keeping our global and multigenerational audience in mind. Work to strengthen relationships with the photographers you are directing through briefings, regular contact and feedback.Coordinate with International desk editors and security team members to ensure the utmost preparation, training and safety of our photojournalists in the field.Contribute when needed to coverage outside of the International report, including home screen presentations, Express stories, and breaking/after hours news.Maintain and meet your desk’s photo budget, process/approve invoices in a timely fashion.Attend photo department meetings to report and share your desk’s visual priorities.This position reports to the Assistant Editor for International Photography.What You’ll Bring:Proven experience in a newsroom or equivalent.Significant experience assigning photographers and working with photojournalists in the field in a variety of circumstances.An enthusiasm for visual journalism, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics.Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.Proven deep research skills.Knowledge of digital tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media platforms.The initiative to take on and learn new tasks.Commitment to the mission of The New York Times.Please submit a portfolio with examples of work that you have assigned and/or edited along with your CV.
