About me
I have always been somewhat dramatic, so it came as no surprise that I wanted to get involved in theatre. I was born profoundly deaf, and was bought up orally, but started to use sign language in my school years, and I now have a Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language. I also have a cochlear implant to help me hear. I have been interested in theatre since seeing the musical, 'Cats' at age 14, and have since built up a big passion for theatre, and making it accessible for deaf/hearing integrated audiences. As well as doing acting work, I work Front of House at the Polka Theatre, and also volunteer as a drama practitioner at a theatre company. I am fun-loving and always love to meet new people and experience new things!Acting experience:
Theatre : Mneme in Thisbe (UK tour) BSL signer in The Little Match Girl & The Fir Tree and Around the World on Christmas Day (Mirth, Marvel and Maud), Thisbe (Waterloo Vaults), Sign Singer in A Very West End Christmas (Show Choir, Dorking Halls), Alien in Aliens Love Underpants (Haringey Lit Festival), News reporter/Narrator in Cardboard City, Emma in The Person Behind the Profile (Handprint Theatre), Narrator in Shotgun Wedding (ALRA), Daysi in The Winged Man, Rennie in No Means Yes, Mother in The Seven Deadly Sins (University of Reading)
Film: Annie in 'Into the Woods' - ALRA
Dancing experience:
I have very little dancing experience, but if I am given a dance routine to perform, I will be happy to oblige. I have been trained a little in tap, ballet and jazz.
Singing experience:
I can sing with my hands! This method is called "sign singing", which uses sign language and visual methods to create songs.
Television experience:
I have been involved in a documentry on "See Hear" that was about cochlear implants.
I played Annie in 'Into the Woods' at ALRA. The film can be viewed here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j-NbODm1ew
Specific skills:
Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL)
Trained in making theatre accessible for deaf/hearing integrated audiences
My interests:
I am passionate about theatre and musical theatre, and have seen a number of musicals several times.
I am profoundly deaf, and although my first language is English, I have a level 3 certificate in British Sign Language.
I am passionate about fighting for equality in theatre and film. Being profoundly deaf, I believe that people with a disability are just as capable of being able to put on a show/make a film as their able-bodied peers.
