About me
My career as a professional artist, director and performer spans over 30 years of professional artistic practice dominated by my role as co-director/lead artist of environmental arts group Red Earth.I began as an actor, director and street performer in the heady and experimental 1980’s. I have worked in the outdoor arts sector, literally in the field, for most of my professional career. Aside from Red Earth I have my own practice, creating leftfield performances often in collaboration with other artists.
I am a character actor with strong physical and facial expression. A dynamic performer, capable of improvising and adapting on the spot, and happy to get messed up.
My experience and skills cover the artistic spectrum and include actor, dancer, musician, TV presenter and clown; as well as project leader, director, producer and teacher.
Performance companies: director, producer, writer and actor/performer. I have either created or collaborated in six companies ranging from experimental theatre (e.g. Glass House) and street performance to community arts events and mid-scale outdoor performances (Red Earth).
Leadership roles: creative director and project conceptualist, producer, fundraiser and educator. I am an experienced project leader and logistical manager, administrator, negotiator and communicator, experienced in working with partners, funders, authorities and the public.
Designer and maker: sets and outdoor processional structures and site-specific installations, working with greenwood, withie and papier mache, fire and water. I am an effective designer and illustrator.
International work: I have travelled in order to research, experience and absorb other cultures and have devised, produced and performed work in Mongolia, Japan, France and Indonesia in collaboration with international artists.
Educationalist: I am a qualified teacher (PGCE) and have taught theatre, environmental, outdoor and site-specific arts courses in schools, colleges and universities, including external MA examination. I have presented papers and created collaborative events at several university symposia.
Other skills: Percussionist, singer, fire worker and small-scale pyrotechnician; off-road driver.
I value research, collaboration, flexibility, risk taking and integrity as essential to the creation of high quality work.
