After falling in love with textiles at school, I headed off to further my education, gaining a BA (Hons) in Fashion Studies from the University of Lincoln. Upon graduating, I began working in various sectors, temping in offices around Lincolnshire and working in retail for a couple of years.
I always had a desire to continue in the fashion industry and I moved to Manchester to begin my search. It was here that I began a placement with a very talented designer in her shop, Blessing Sule. During my time there, I honed my skills and gained invaluable technical experience, as well as having an insight into how a small design business was run on a day to day basis. I moved back to Boston at the end of my placement with renewed enthusiasm, invested in the machinery I needed and embarked upon my career in bespoke ladies’ dressmaking and alterations by starting my own business in 2012.
I offered a design service to clients who have an idea or occasion in mind, as well as occasionally producing designs of my own to sell and wear myself. I drafted all my own patterns and produced unique garments that were tailored to my clients' wants and needs. I also offered alteration and repair services and have altered a wide range of garments.
A big passion of mine is film and theatre, and this is an avenue I would like to explore further as my career progresses. I have been involved in theatre productions from an early age and have recently gained valuable and wide-ranging experience within the wardrobe departments of both theatre and film productions.
I have worked on two film projects in recent years, heading the costume and set dressing department. For the last two years I have altered pantomime costumes for some of Polka Dot Pantomimes’ productions. I was honoured to be asked to do the same this year, altering and making a considerable number of pieces which were sent to various Polka Dot productions across the country. I have attended the theatres in the run up to the opening nights and been on hand for any final alterations or repairs needed, as well as helped pick costumes for some of the cast.
I also have experience of helping backstage as a dresser at fashion shows during my time at university and thrive on the fast-paced energy of shows.
Due to the nature of the work I have undertaken in recent years, I am used to working flexibly around the needs of my clients and working to tight deadlines, often working unsociable hours to get a job completed. I can work well under pressure and try my very best to accommodate any last-minute changes to work when required.
