Dan Horrigan is true bright light on the horizon of SciFi. He has crafted two films that were highly regarded in our festival, a screenplay that placed in our competition, and in later years, reviewed films and screenplays for inclusion in our festival from other filmmakers. I have the utmost trust in Dan's judgement and am anxious to see the next classic he crafts. I think any screenwriter would benefit from his thoughts.

Dan Horrigan has been on the MiSciFi team since we selected his film Populace to screen in 2016. Since then he has been a valued screenplay co-ordinator and judge. His written reports have been very well received and provided useful feedback for our many entrants to the award each year. We have taken Dan’s opinions seriously awarding finalist and winners laurels to numerous screenwriters and Dan’s work has been vital in providing a resource for those attending Florida’s largest Genre film festival.

    Troy Bernier

    Artistic Director

    Miami International Science Fiction Festival

I have known Dan since 2010 when he first attended one of our Introductory Play writing courses.

In this time I have worked with him as a dramaturg on several occasions and I have come to regard him as one of the most passionate, dedicated, tireless, fearless and committed artists, working in new writing today.

Dan is a big personality, with big ideas, beautifully balanced by his vision, drive and belief in the power and force of theatre. A force, which he fully regards as a wholly positive and constructive force for change and a force for good.

Dan has an insatiable appetite for theatre, which he seeks to feed at every opportunity. It is this appetite that inspires him to make theatre (as a writer and a director) that is bold, challenging, imaginative and exciting.

Dan’s passion and imagination inevitably sets him on path to make and create theatre that opens up the world, probes it, dissects it and exposes it in way that engages audiences and moves them in ways they could never previously imagine, nor possibly ever forget after the fact.

In short, I have no hesitation in providing a positive reference for the above mentioned person, by virtue of his utter commitment to the art form and his dedication to his practice.

    Ola Animashawun.

    Creative Director, Euphoric Ink.

Dan Horrigan is a dedicated, ambitious and hard-working theatre maker with multiple strings to his bow. The work he has produced, written and directed at Theatre503 has been testament to his efforts to make great theatre happen. Although his company, Sky or the Bird, is relatively young, Dan is working to put the foundations in place to ensure that his work stands the test of time and that the company is making theatre for years to come. I’m sure I’ll continue seeing Dan’s work in theatre's around London in the future. Dan has the ability to attract good people to work with him and for each production Sky or The Bird has brought together strong diverse teams to realise his vision.

Lisa Caggnacci - associate artistic director Theatre503 2012.

Dan Horrigan has a proven track record of inventive new writing that explores the human condition. I've had the pleasure of witnessing him leading workshops for Transmission Workshop - which I co-founded and runs Tuesday evenings at Park Theatre. He is motivational and engages the actors in every session giving them a variety of techniques to learn. He is passionate about his work and shows a real commitment to exploring new ways of working and thinking.

    PARK Theatre

I am an actor of thirty years experience mainly with Propeller an internationally acclaimed Shakespeare company and a teacher of acting at drama schools such as Alra and Italia Conti and Shakespeare's globe. Dan saw me acting a few times and asked me if I would work on his new play with him. I saw a production of an early draft at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London and was impressed with the intensity of the piece and in particular with the character of Martin who had a complexity and moral ambiguity I was drawn to, so when he asked me to read and help develop the play I jumped at the chance. We spent three days reading and discussing new drafts with time in between for Dan to develop and rewrite. I was really impressed with his writing in the first place which was both searingly honest and written with a visceral rhythm and poetry that was a gift for an actor. But I was also impressed with how seriously he listened to the actors comments and criticisms and ideas and how he was able to go away and take on board the comments so that each draft came back better and more deft. I also had a brilliant time working with him and the other actors. What I like about Dan is how seriously he takes the work and how honest and searching he is with his writing. But also how much fun we have by taking the creative process so seriously. And he is willing to take criticism with the good humour it requires - there is rigour but no defensiveness at all. I should add that I also had the good fortune to act in a lovely radio play he had written while working at the radio rep. It was a very clever piece again with a complexity and ambiguity and feeling. Suspense that are Dan's strength. I had a great time working on the radio play and so did my co actor. It was our favourite of the five new plays we worked on that day and recorded. I have a huge respect for Dan's writing and love working with him and hope to act in another of his plays as soon as possible.

    Tony Bell - Actor.

I have known Dan Horrigan since early 2010, when he was referred to me by Prof. Elizabeth Schafer of Royal Holloway UL. He was then seeking advice for a production of Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi that he had been engaged to direct. At that time, I was extensively researching the dramaturgy of the same play and had interviewed numerous directors for my investigations. I was immediately struck by the originality of Dan's concept and the creative intelligence with which he approached the play. His production played for a month in the West End to a good critical reception. My own critique of it can be accessed under my name and the title, The Dangerous Edge of Things (pp.355-9) on the Royal Holloway website.

In late 2011, Dan approached me again to act in a more formal capacity as dramaturg for a notional production of The White Devil, I readily agreed and, over the past year and a half, we have met regularly to discuss the play. Once again, I have been impressed by his understanding of this difficult text, his openness to ideas and his creative imagination in tackling the staging problems it presents.

Dan is also a prolific writer for the stage and has worked regularly, both individually and collaboratively, on a range of dramatic texts. For example, in August 2012, l saw a performance of his play, Still I See My Baby, at The Cockpit Theatre. This dystopian fantasy explored the chilling potential implications of a future, in which genetic engineering is linked to human reproduction. In imaginatively exploiting a subject drawn from today's "designer babies" headlines, Dan showed that he could create an original and relevant drama, with effective plotting, plausible characterisation and fine use of language.

Dan has an excellent understanding of dramatic theory, augmented by his experience as a theatrical practitioner. By nature, he is a good communicator; whether as director, teacher or writer, his intuitive default position is to lead, but work collaboratively.

    Dr John Buckingham,

    Teacher & Director

I am happy to recommend my student Dan Horrigan to you. Dan is currently studying for an MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London and Central Saint Martins. As part of the course, I have read much of Dan’s work and I have been impressed by the quality and variety of his writing. I have also been impressed by the many other roles Dan is currently engaged in in the industry – from teaching to directing to running his own company – and the seriousness with which he undertakes these endeavours. Dan is a thoughtful and generous member of the MA class and a pleasure to have in the group.

    Jennifer Tuckett

    Course Leader, MA Dramatic Writing

I was invited by Dan to join him on an exciting new project bringing new writers and new directors together to create a compendium of scenes covering what it is like to live in certain areas of London at Theatre 503. London: Four Corners, One Heart was extremely well managed and put together by Dan and his company, and the experience helped strengthen my company's presence on the theatre scene. The process was well supported; offering all members individual support and feedback, while also creating a company atmosphere; a fantastic feat considering Dan had four teams all meeting and rehearsing in separate venues scattered around London. He was able to involve Arts Council representatives and high profile theatre directors and makers such as Che Walker, to bring interest to the project and build it's impact. At all times, it was Dan's firm grasp of the project, artistically, and it's intended impact, commercially, that made my involvement in the project extremely rewarding.

    Dominic Kelly

    Acting Teacher/Director

Through the 7 years of knowing and working with Dan Horrigan I have always found him to be highly creative and innovative theatre maker. As a writer, his scripts are thought provoking and evocative; as a director he is imaginative and inspiring. Each occasion I have worked with Dan it has been a rewarding experience; his outlook and professionalism has always left me with new knowledge about theatre making and its process. He is a talented and intelligent creative; a joy to work with and I hope I get an opportunity to work with him again in the future. Kerry Irvine, Lecturer/Producer.
