About me
I have been working in the sphere of performance and theatre for more than 20 years. During that time I have collected, utilised and passed on many techniques and skills.I attended the National School For Circus Skills and Performing Arts, studying many of the facets of Circus Skills and Movement. My particular focus was within Equilibristics and Mime (specifically Decroux Technique). Having completed the course, I worked as a Circus Performer using Acrobatics, Clown, Fool, Mime, Trapeze (both Static and Trapeze Volent), Tight and Slack Rope, Prop Manipulation and Slapstick.
In between engagements I attended short courses in subjects that seemed to be of use or interest including Comedia Del Arte with Olly Crick, Neutral and Character Mask with Trestle Theatre Company, Fool with Jon Lee, Clown with Frankie Anderson, Improvisation, expressive movement and Contact Impro with Guy Dartnell, Slapstick with Johnny Hutch and Devised Theatre with Luci Gorell Barnes. I toured world wide with solo mime shows of my own devising and worked with street theatre companies of world renown.
I worked as a Choreographer and Movement Director for numerous Circuses, Street Theatre and Physical Theatre Companies, helping performers and directors to find safe and effective methods to further the story through movement and physicality and constructing specific warm-up and preparation exercises to facilitate continued good health and professional focus.
I continued to experiment with the use of movement and the performer by furthering my studies in mask work, martial arts and slapstick. I sought out specific practitioners and situations that would be of benefit to my eclectic research.
I had the opportunity to take on an apprenticeship as Assistant Movement Teacher at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School under the expert eye of Jonathan Howell. Specialising in Stage Combat, Actors Movement, Clowning and Acrobatics, this gave me a wealth of information; learning about effective teaching techniques and finding clues toward the historical progression of Movement and Story as well as weapon use and development in Europe and the wider world.
Having spent almost three years assisting Jonathan, I became aware that my next area of research had to involve an intense period of putting the skills I had gathered into a more mainstream professional setting.
I have spent much of the last 12 years working in professional theatre, being lucky enough to find many challenging and inspiring productions to be part of.
I have had the opportunity to work alongside Actors, Stunt Performers and Dancers, Acrobats and Clowns, Opera Singers and Puppeteers; and in each case I have observed similarities and specific differences in the needs and approaches necessary to further both the telling of the story and the health and well being of the performers.
