About me
Although my qualification route has not been via the norm with GCSEs followed by 'A' levels, I feel my personal route through trade qualifications into higher education, first with a joinery apprenticeship and then an electrical apprenticeship, has resulted in me obtaining a great deal of practical and theoretical knowledge, enabling me on my present course to have a far better grasp of not only how equipment is used but also how it works. This I have found invaluable in both the design and set up of equipment, inclusive of how it can be interfaced with computer technology. My part time employment at Newcastle Tyne Theatre, as a LX rigger and stage hand, has given me hands on experience in the real world of Theatre, dealing with the limitations of an old theatre when putting together shows. Some of the work I have been involved in includes: Britain's Got Talent, Jack and the Bean Stalk, The Secret Cold Play Concert, 80's Rock Show, The Rat Pack, The Armstrong and Miller Show and The Chuckle Brothers ect. While working on these shows, I have been designated the following roles: LX rigger, follow spot operator, stage hand and set construction.
I find it a rewarding and challenge to use the cutting edge technology and skills I have learned on my current course and adapt them to suit the situations prevailing.
Recently I was working on a Scout Gang Show for the North East area, when it became necessary to improvise with the lighting and sound equipment within the theatre, after it was condemned just days prior to the show. Bringing in equipment at the last minute called for some radical decisions on sound, lighting and set construction. This would have been a challenge in its self but the fact that it was December and the northeast was hit with 5 ft of snow + drifts meant all the gear had to be moved in one 4x4 and my little fiat punto, but all the crew pulled together. which resulted in a professional and successful show week.
I would like to bring to you attention the fact that I am dyslexic. During school years I was given help via a Statement, however whilst at Newcastle College and Dewentside College, during my joinery training and BTEC Electronics, I had chosen not to receive assistance, although both Colleges are aware of my dyslexia. Within my present course I have again chosen not to receive help, although I have provision in place through the Students Loan Company should I require to use it.
Additional skills:
I have always felt that to be a good manager it is important to fully understand the work and workplace situation. A practical understanding of all roles in the industry from the lowest to the highest, in my opinion, sets you in the best position to manage and create spectacular sets and shows. Prior to returning to full time education, when working in my father's business, I was expected on occasions to supervise employees and I would say being able to do their work myself was a great help in this task. Just as working with scaffolding in the construction industry has helped me to more fully understand rigging and steal decking for stage, regarding loading and load distribution.
My great love of computers, from their construction through to homemade programs, their execution and ability to obtain a desired end product, opens new doors to interfacing equipment in sound and lighting.
A family project which I am also involved in (Developing a former cinema into a 360 seat theatre, with three rehearsal rooms) gives me scope to introduce these new ideas and ways of working at some point in the future.
great work ethic

Industry awards:
At Newcastle College, during my joinery apprenticeship, I was nominated for 'Apprentice of the Year' in my second year
