The Coconut Diaries, 2018 - www.kimprovised.wordpress.com
The Coconut Diaries stays in the world of teenagers. Written by STELLA AJAYI with pacy direction from KATIE TURNER it takes a knowing look at racial stereotyping and prejudices expressed as dating preference. TIEGAN BYRNE plays Amber who fancies ALEXANDER HOPWOOD’s Chris. But dating at the school dance isn’t easy especially when like Amber you prefer Bob Dylan to Snoop Dogg. Byrne is excellent, bringing the ebb and flow of Amber’s confidence to life with touching warmth. Hopwood gets a lot of laughs as the well observed white boy poseur. And the comic technique of DALILA McFARLANE-MARTIN brings the house down as Amber’s friend. She has bigger balls than any of the boys at the dance but of course this is no guarantee of a date. Her preferred choice “doesn’t go out with black girls” It is entirely his loss. This is a very frank and funny piece of writing.
The Maltese Walter, 2015 - www.theatrebubble.com
The Maltese Walter, directed by Katie Turner, returns to the US with writer John Minigan, is a quirky intelligent take on the Western World’s (at least) obsession with super heroes- increasingly the obsession of grown men- I work in a cinema so I know this to be disturbingly true. Using film noir as its guiding structural device, there’s a lot of laughs as we watch shy Walter wrestle with his alter ego Noir Man. Tricked by his Woody Allen like therapist and robbed of his bride, there’s an actual serious commentary on how we treat those we consider to be mentally ill running behind the comedic moments.
