TV Show directory - BUILDING ENGLAND (2 Part show)

Presenter Judith Jones chronicles the history of the English building from the 8th to the 17th century; from its monastic roots in a Lindisfarne priory to the utilitarian buildings of the early industrial age. In Durham cathedral, we witness the invention of the ribbed vault; in Fountains Abbey, the building becomes functional and Gothic; in Warkworth, the 14th century castle is turned into a home fit for a Lord and his ‘merrye’ banquets, while in Elizabethan England, the advent of brick and the dismantling of the great hall leads to the invention of the bedroom. Judith also examines Burghley House, Castle Howard and York minster in this remarkable history.

In Part II, Presenter Judith Jones continues her journey through the history of the English building from the 18th
to the 19th century, when an industrial revolution brought iron into the construction of the civilised
world. We learn how the ‘piano nobile’ gave way to the grand entertainments of the age and how the landing was born. Judith’s grand adventure sends her to Bath and Sussex in search of Georgian
splendour and a French revolutionary spirit from which the modern architectural age was spawned.
