Based on Jennifer Worth's memoir of the same name, Call the Midwife is a BBC period drama series following the lives of a group of midwives working in London's East End in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Much like its source material, it is a moving, funny and colourful depiction of the lives of the lead characters. The series follows the protagonist Jenny (played by Jessica Raine), a newly qualified midwife, who joins an eccentric, lovable community of nuns who are nurses at Nonnatus House, a convent. Initially daunted by her surroundings, Jenny develops incredible friendships with her fellow nurses. Aside from Raine, the star-studded cast stars: Miranda Hart, Helen George, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main, Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Judy Parfitt, Cliff Parisi, Stephen McGann, Ben Caplan, Emerald Fennell, Victoria Yeates, Jack Ashton, Linda Bassett, Charlotte Ritchie, Kate Lamb, Jennifer Kirby, Annabelle Apsion and Leonie Elliott.

The series is produced by Neal Street Productions, a production company founded and owned by the film director and producer Sam Mendes, Call the Midwife executive producer Pippa Harris, and Caro Newling. The series premiered in 2012 and has won several major awards, including a BAFTA.
