A woman, Meg, who works in child-protection has a stillbirth an having been traumatised by the experience, befriends a woman in hospital, Christine, who has a daughter, Eleanor, with breathing problems. Meg becomes convinced that Eleanor is being abused. This leads to Meg kidnapping Eleanor, taking on an assumed name and heading to Christine's hometown to prove that Eleanor was abused.
