The Great is a comedy-drama television series and the first season was released on streaming service Hulu in 2020, with a second season confirmed two months after its premiere. The series is based on Tony McNamara's play revolving around Catherine the Great, which premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2008, and McNamara also wrote a film adaption of the play.
The Great showcases the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia's history. The series is fictionalized and portrays Catherine in her youth and marriage with Emperor Peter III (amalgamated with Peter II) focusing on the plot to kill her depraved and dangerous husband. The series boasts a star-studded cast, including Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, Charity Wakefield, Gwilym Lee, Adam Godley, Douglas Hodge, Belinda Bromilow, Richard Pyros, Bayo Gbadamosi and Sebastian de Souza.
