About me

Justin Powell is a Los Angeles-based writer/director that most commonly works with his filmmaking partner and life-long friend David Charbonier.

He has thus far completed three feature films. The first two, THE BOY BEHIND THE DOOR and THE DJINN, had success on the festival circuit before being released to critical acclaim (garnering certified fresh ratings of 97% and 86% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes). He just wrapped his third feature, OPEN HOUSE, which stars the award winning up and coming Spanish actress, Alicia Sanz, and Gotham award nominated Raúl Castillo. It is currently in post-production.

The Hollywood Reporter called THE BOY BEHIND THE DOOR “a delicate and memorably successful balancing act that effectively contextualizes some deliberately challenging material” while Bloody Disgusting called it “unrelentingly intense” and “shockingly dark,” noting that “Charbonier and Powell created one impressively ballsy debut.”

In addition to writing and directing, Justin has extensive knowledge of post-production, having edited THE DJINN and serving as a post manager for Lionsgate Entertainment for several years.
