About me

I'm Robert Murphy, an award-winning cinematographer and editor based in Los Angeles and an expert on bringing top-notch production values and a personal touch to independent films. I've shot ten feature films and numerous shorts, documentaries, music videos, and commercials. I'm experienced with the Alexa, Red, Canon, Sony and Panasonic cameras. My shooting style is naturalistic and organic, and heavily influenced by the work of Terrence Malick and his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. But I also enjoy highly stylized lighting styles in the vein of David Lynch and Julia Ducournau, featuring cinematography by Frederick Elmes and
Ruben Impens.

This past year I was the cinematographer for the feature film Peridot, which is being distributed this fall in North America by Gravitas and in the UK and Europe by Peccadillo. I was also the DP and supporting actor for “In Search of a Midnight Kiss,” which won the John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award for best feature film under $500,000.

In addition, I have filmed commercials for international companies such as Eventors, Gooroo Boosters, Discover Card, and Zonia.

I was the DP and editor for the feature film “9 Full Moons,” which premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival and is available on iTunes. I was also the DP and editor for the feature film “Carlos Spills the Beans,” which premiered at the Raindance Film Festival and is available on Amazon Prime. I also shoot and edit “Preface to Being Jaded,” a popular web series featured on Funny or Die. I was also recently the DP for the extra week of shooting for “The Loner,” co-star- ring Julian Sands, which premiered to great reviews at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. I’m also currently directing and editing my first feature film, “Rage,” about two talented actresses that get into a violent road rage incident.

On and off set I am a collaborator who is capable of dealing with any personality type, and I can also contribute to any part of the production process. On several independent projects, I have: —worked with the directors and producers in pre-production on script revisions, casting, budgets, and locations —shot the film as a DP —edited the film with the director —helped with the final stages of post-production including both sound mixing and color correction —and finally, helped with the promotion of the film at various film festivals and with the actual release of the film.
