About me
I am a recent graduate of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) with a BFA degree in Technical Theatre Design and Technology with a concentration in Costume Design. I am very interested in joining your company. As you will see in my resume, I have both educational and professional experience in costume production as well as in design work and as a member and leader of several wardrobe crews. I have also had some experience styling and maintaining wigs, as well as applying specialty makeup and prosthetics.I have been run wardrobe crew since high school. I have experience applying, styling and rejuvenating wigs, as well as experience with specialty make-ups and prosthetics. At UNCG, I was wardrobe crew chief for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Alice, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. In all of these situations I had crews of 15-20 undergraduates with differing levels of experience. As a costume intern for THTR 232 I was wardrobe supervisor for Koko Karate and the Kung Fu Kittens. Each of these shows involved several quick changes, quick rigging, specialty makeup application and maintenance, Wig styling, application, and maintenance, as well as speedy but sturdy repair work that I have completed during the run. At the Des Moines Metro Opera I had the opportunity to run wardrobe crew for 3 operas in rep. It was an interesting learning experience. I learned that the opera world shares some with the world of theatre, but also has several of its own rules when it comes to performers. I am very organized and focused backstage. I love working with actors and being part of the life of the show.
As an undergraduate assistant at UNCG I had the opportunity to expand my stitching skills every day. On several occasions I took responsibility for patterning and first hand projects. I worked quite closely with our draper on several shows and projects, including The Threepenny Opera and most recently as the first hand for our touring children’s show Charlotte’s Web.
I have made several corsets and am comfortable applying both spiral and white steel boning. I have extensive experience in a variety of hand stitching techniques; I am also comfortable using both industrial and domestic machines, as well as sergers. In this position I also had the opportunity, several times, to assist our costume shop manager. On several occasions I was responsible for instructing a number of practicum students on tasks. These tasks could span from a simple alteration, such as a hem, to a more major alteration, such as the taking in of a period bodice. I have broad experience in the making of crafts including mask making, dyeing, and millinery. I have worked as the Craft supervisor on a few shows this past year including Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson which required a quantity of knowledge in blood making and special effect techniques.
In the summer of 2012, I had the opportunity to work as the Costume supervisor for Way Off Broadway in Fairfield, Iowa. My job responsibilities included organizing and fitting rental costumes for 2 full scale musicals, The Music Man and The Wizard of Oz. I also designed a few costumes that were unavailable from the rental company. I
styled wigs for The Music Man, and designed special makeup for The Wizard of Oz. Along with these first two shows I had the opportunity to design the final show of the season, Orphan Train. I worked from a collection of costumes that were sent from a previous workshop production of the show, a few items that we rented, as well as the companies own limited stock, and purchased items fitting and assigning garments from the correct period and appropriate to the characters economic status. It was a fantastic opportunity to work in a management and design position alongside a director and production manager from New York City.
I believe that my willingness to learn, creativity, and strong work ethic would make me an excellent addition to your staff. I am young and hardworking and I learn very quickly. I feel that I could bring energy, fresh ideas, and positivity to your theatre. I work well with others and enjoy collaborating. My goal is to be the best I can be at anything I am asked to do.
