Audio Mechanics

2016, 90 minutes

I restored hundreds of film titles ranging from the optical era film titles through to the early 2000's.

I provided audio restoration/editing/mixing on hundreds of films ranging from the 1930's through to the early 2000's. I worked from mono optical tracks through to the 'mag' era to tape and then digital formats more recently. I was involved in the whole process from selecting a 'preferred' element from various elements to submitting a cost estimate to the actual restoration work and finally to creating final deliverables. The restoration process involves cleaning up transfer clicks/pops/thumps created during the transfer from analog to digital. I used mastering software/plugins to reduce noise, wow/flutter, de-ess, EQ to enhance and 'update' the sound to play accurately on modern playback systems. We also built reconfigured, or 'up-mixed' from one track configuration such as LCRS to 5.1 by building an Low Frequency (Lfe) channel from 'bussing' program material from the FX and MX tracks to a newly created sub-channel. We also created stereo surrounds during this process.
