Distant Interiors

2018, 15 minutes

Distant Interiors observes the dynamic of a family with an aging member and how this unit functions in an enclosed living space.

fter moving back home to her Mother and Grandfather, Ada (early 20s) finds herself, at first involuntarily, readjusting to the lack of privacy and new rhythm of life. At the same time, her youthful energy alters the quiet atmosphere that Mother and Grandfather have grown accustomed to. The shift in dynamic offers insights into Ada, her Mother and especially Grandfather whose advanced age and declining health wear heavily on the rest of the household. The film taps into a relatable subject matters (aging, familial connections) across cultures. In the social and political culture we are living in, it's important for me as a filmmaker to portray immigrant families outside of the stereotypical narratives. By focusing on the everyday struggles and family relationships, I would love to portray this family as "an american family", unique and ordinary in its own way.
