Love Letters of Ulysses Grant

2017, 105 minutes

“The Love Letters of Ulysses S. Grant” tells the story of the life of General Grant, through his love letters.

Ulysses S. Grant gained fame as Supreme Commander of all Union forces, the victor of the American Civil War and the eighteenth President of the United States. Few people know that Ulysses S. Grant wrote over one hundred beautiful, romantic, passionate love letters to his lifelong sweetheart, Julia Dent. “The Love Letters of Ulysses S. Grant” tells the story of the life of General Grant, through his love letters. The writing of seven of General Grant’s greatest love letters are re-created, in stunning, beautiful detail, thanks to the in depth, in person research of the writer and director, Patricia Cameron. Working closely with curators and archivists at the Library of Congress, National Archives and Smithsonian National Postal museum, Patricia has woven together a “texture of the times” with accurate military uniforms, 1800s post offices, and even the exact names of the postmasters who helped young Ulysses deliver his love letters! From his first love letter, written as a young second lieutenant in his first army camp, in his first army tent, which was leaking, to his final love letter written to Julia as he was dying of throat cancer and could no longer speak, the life and the heart of Ulysses S. Grant is revealed as never before. “The Love Letters of Ulysses S. Grant” is uplifting, beautiful...and true.
