No pay for work?

Hi all, new here. Is it just me or do all the jobs not give any pay for work? I have looked at several job opportunities and all of them have "No Pay" for the salary. What gives?

Editorial Comment Hi Steven,

Our Jobs Board is divided into two sections Paid Jobs, and Opportunities. Opportunities on mandy are our low/no pay jobs, the Jobs board can be filtered by this using the dropdown at the top of the Jobs board. You can filter your email alerts from the dropdown, Jobs > Job Notification Preferences, reduce your 'Opportunities - Roundup' to No to prevent unpaid job alerts.

Best Regards, The Mandy Admin Team.

honestly i think this site should only accept paid work.

If I have to pay a subscription to Mandy then I'm sure Mandy uderstands the importance of getting paid for your service.

Labor should be paid for

Wait, so for clarity do prospective jobs posted here actually pay anyone? The only one I saw was to join the Army as a producer of sorts. All these other gigs are no pay. That's absurd.

I’ve seen paid gigs for cinematography. But it’s scarce tbh.

This site, and others similar to this, are a great resource to help you start getting out there on lo/no pay gigs, build a reputation and potentially start a career. A full scale production with real rates would almost never use a site like this because by the time you get to that level, it's all about word of mouth networks that take care of each department. But if you're not there yet, you have to build to it somehow.

I've seen lucrative careers start from no pay gigs on Mandy and go from there to the well paid Union gigs. It takes patience and work -- and having a platform that allows you to get started with no/low pay jobs is an invaluable resource.

I completely agree that there are too many unpaid jobs here. If I'm going to PAY for a subscription, I except PAID job opportunities. The money has to be compensated somehow.

It's tough for SO MANY reasons but also it is impossible to consider these jobs because you can't use unpaid gigs when submitting them to Contract Services.

I understand the difference between paid work and the opportunities but it is really important that roles that should be paid ie for commercial companies are not accepted as opportunities. Even student films if part of an accredited course should be paying National Minimum Wage. Not to do so is against the law and Mandy could be putting itself open to legal action as promoting modern day slavery.

If there is no pay, those hoaxers -- ahem -- I mean "legit producers" should stick to Craig's List. They take the suckers -- ahem -- I mean "investors/clients" to the cleaners while leaving the loser -- ahem -- I mean "filmmaker" holding the (empty) bag.
Quite surprisingly, I found many a great agency on Craig's List that pay better! They Zelle me money right away without the NET 30/90/180 b-s claiming the client must pay the invoice first (while the landlord wants this month's rent now and the creditors want their high-interest credit card minimum ASAP). It's a crap shoot!
Next topic -- the economics of FLAT RATE.

I see some Paid positions for Composers, though it does seem there's more unpaid work opps. on mandy.
I agree with Jezebel and Ryan - if we pay for subscription, then we should have Paid work / opportunities.

Yea anyone who is on here looking for work should always be paid for their services. Just because we are freelancers, does not mean we are here to work for free. If that were the case, we would just sit at home and not do anything at all!

I fully agree, paid jobs only with the paid subscription. It seems the inde film industry want everything for free these days. When filmmaker's such as a Sound Designer or film editor for example. Use their equipment, studio power bill, apps and other out of pocket expenses like upgrades. It all cost us money. Also these differed payment jobs seem to be going nowhere fast. Us filmmakers put in painstaking hours of hard work and dedication, to provide films with pro quality work, just to never see any money at all. I'm still owed $17,500 for a deferred pay film job. At this point! I dont think I'll see a penny of that. But the producer's are really excited about their film. How it won awards and took their career career to another level. That lead me to stop accepting any deferred or unpaid work.

Early on in my career, of course I would work for no pay, but asking for people for free is also asking for less than stellar results. Imagine wanting to paint your house and asking for painters of any sort and skill to show up and then wanting something you'd be proud to show off! Pay your people. Just sayin'

I recently returned to looking for jobs on Mandyand I have to say I'm astounded at the number of no pay and ridiculously low paying jobs on here, especially the ones that are asking for seasoned professionals. I'm trying to decide if this is worth paying for, but if this is what I get on a daily basis, so far the answer is no.

Years ago, Mandy was a good source for paid jobs, at least in my field, VFX. Sony Imageworks, Dreamworks, etc. all posted job offerings. Sadly, no more.
