This producer is transforming the journalism of The Times’s newsroom into audio, which includes quick-turn daily news segments and complicated narratives (that are often produced over several days). As an audio producer for The Daily, you will often cut and build episodes of the show -- creating ambitious work drawn from the news of the day on tight deadlines. Audio producers should show creativity and autonomy in finding and pitching the most compelling stories for audio — typically using Times journalism as the backbone. Producers work in close collaboration with an editor, and in some cases a senior producer, to take stories from conception to completion. Skills and responsibilities include:Shows creativity and autonomy in finding and consistently pitching stories that become strong episodesMonitors the news cycle and Times editorial calendar for shorter-term news storiesParticipates in or holds pre-interviews with reporters and sourcesAdheres to quick turnaround deadlines and environment and focuses on finding the best take on the big news stories of our time in sophisticated, distinctive ways. Demonstrates a hunger for daily news.Works with editors and senior producers to build a narrative structure for stories that are timely and relevant, but are not bound to a daily news cycle. Those stories may run as episodes of The Daily or other programs, with several days or weeks of production, or they may occasionally develop into multi-part series (narrative producers are particularly adept at)Works with senior producers, editors and hosts in writing questions for interviews and/or scriptsLogs interviews in studio and assists with in-studio directing of host and guestsCoordinates with senior producers and editors on post-production planConsistently selects the best available tape; cuts raw tape of reporter and source interviewWorks closely with an editor or a senior producer to build stories in Pro Tools using reporter interviews, source interviews, archive materials, musicOften takes the lead on cutting 2-ways and building scenes of the showUnderstands which scenes in an episode should be built out as scenes and how to use tape and scoring to do that effectivelyClose The Daily at night when in the closing rotation Make editorial decisions about length, format and tone before and during production Use editorial judgment reflective of Times mission and principlesThis position is represented by the News Guild of NY#LI-AM1
