Amazon announce 'Lord of the Rings' TV series in the works
Amazon has acquired the rights for 'Lord of the Rings' TV series.
The streaming giant has announced that it has committed to a multi-series television adaptation inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels.
The series will be set before 'The Fellowship of the Rings' and explore new storylines that will see Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins and the rest of Middle Earth on the small screen.
The series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.
“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen”, said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series at Amazon Studios.
“We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
Matt Galsor, speaking on behalf of the Tolkien Estate and Trust, and HarperCollins said “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for ‘The Lord of the Rings’.”
“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
The deal for the TV series estimated at around $250m (£191m).
Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of 'The Lord of the Rings' went on to win 17 Academy Awards and grossed almost $6 billion (£4.5 billion) worldwide at the box office.

Not sure about this, I think I could play a young Gimli to be fair. Would just have to dig a hole for me to stand in during each scene
