"It’s important to have people to turn to who will be there no matter what" actress Cara Horgan

Hi Cara, please tell us how you fell in love with acting?

Ever since I was very little I always loved performing. My brother and I would do impressions of the characters in comedies like Blackadder and The Young Ones. We had VHS tapes that we would watch over and over like ‘Grease’ and ‘The Goonies’. The idea of being transported into other worlds always seemed so fun. 

How did you get involved with 'Traitors'?

I auditioned for Traitors in the spring and as soon as I read the script, immediately wanted to be involved. Bash Doran has written such fun characters in a very gripping narrative. I also really loved Dearbhla Walsh’s previous work so I jumped at the chance work on something with her. 

Tell us more about the show and the character you play 'Rae'. Although set after WWII, some of the subjects the show and your character deal with are relevant today, the feeling of Belonging.   

Traitors is a spy thriller set in the Home Office in the aftermath of the Second World War. My character, Rae, is a Jewish woman who works as a typist at the home office and hides her religion from her colleagues. She had a son who was an evacuee and has returned not really remembering her.

Rae also has a few secrets...The period after the war was all about redefining the idea of home. For many people it was a time of uncertainty and mistrust and there was a lack of stability in the government. Many people did not know what they could now call home. I think it’s really relevant to our political situation today both in the UK and America.

What was it like working on the show?

It was a complete joy to work on Traitors. Everyone from the costume team, make up, design, lighting, acting, everyone, was committed to making this beautiful script come to life in the best possible way.

I had a great time with a really lovely group of people.

What is coming up next for you?

I have another project ‘West of Liberty’ coming up later in the year and I’m currently filming something else too. I just hope to continue to make good work with brilliant people!

What advice do you have for up-and-coming actors?

I would say to up-and-coming actors to get a tribe of good mates around you who you completely trust that can offer you some support and consistency. It’s the most brilliant job in the world but it can be very up and down and it’s important to have people to turn to who will be there no matter what.
