  • Project Details
    The Western Stage (TWS) is a theatre program in residence at Hartnell College in Salinas, CA. We are working to mirror the rich diversity of theatre artists that enrich our profession and we seek to deepen the pool of designers who work with our students and community members during our annual production season. We encourage artists of all ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as designers with disabilities, to submit.

    We are seeking a Costume Designer for Tuck Everlasting.

    The responsibility of the Costume Designer requires in-depth research, planning, budgeting, resourcing, creativity and hands-on practical experience. The ideal candidate is equally able to work with the professional design and creative teams involved in the production, as well as the non-professional community volunteers and college students who work in the on-site costume shop.

    Required Skills & Attributes:

    Ability to create sketches/renderings/build drawings and realize a complete costume design with full, practical costumes within the given budget and finite time constraints utilizing a combination of experienced and non-experienced costume shop students.
    Ability to create and realize a complete costume design through a combination of TWS stock pulls, costume rentals, purchases, or original construction. The Designer may need to travel to view/select rentals, purchases and/or fabric, trims and findings.
    Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with all shop personnel and to give clear instructions to costume build teams, which include a combination of experienced and inexperienced students and community volunteers.
    Ability to assist with construction especially if special skills are required and if time constraints demand.
    Attend first team/cast meeting to make a design presentation to the cast + crew; all scheduled production meetings (4); all tech/dress rehearsals to note and facilitate changes or additions as discussed/requested by director/s
    Schedule:

    Includes combinations of days/evenings, weekday/weekend. Flexible schedule is based upon production needs and availability of costume build personnel.
    Residency required for the build period and Tech and dress-rehearsals, which is 27 September-19 November 2022.
    Specific schedule will be created according to production deadlines. Individual availability will be discussed during interview (Zoom).
    Qualifications:

    Extensive knowledge of costume construction, patterning, sewing, and repair
    Demonstrated competencies necessary to perform the job of costume designer.
    Demonstrated competencies necessary to direct developing or new student stitchers.
    High level of creativity, dedication, discretion, professionalism.
    High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to follow-through completely and meet deadlines.
    Ability to work lengthy hours and to manage an irregular schedule that may include weekends and/or holidays occurring within the period of residency.
    Computer facility/literacy. MS Word, Excel; email; Zoom/ Skype/Hangout/Facetime for Virtual Production Meetings.
    Must follow all of TWS and Hartnell College Covid-19 protocols (details below).
    MFA in Theatre Costuming preferred*. (Additional opportunities with advanced degree.)
    *MFA hiring requires application and vetting as an adjunct faculty member at Hartnell College and will require official MFA/MA transcripts; Proof of full vaccination; TB test and Live Scan fingerprints taken locally.

    With everyone’s safety and well-being as the priority, the Costume Shop operations will be based on current State, County and Hartnell College COVID-19 guidelines. Currently these include:

    VACCINATION / COVID-19 TESTING

    Must be fully Vaccinated and upload vaccination to Med Proctor to be employed by the college. If you qualify for exemption you will also need to get clearance for Med Proctor. If unvaccinated you will be required to present proof of a negative test result taken within each 72 hours for the length of your residency. TWS does not provide Covid-19 testing.

    COMPENSATION

    Compensation ranges between $2000- $5000 based on professional experience, scope of the individual production, with additional opportunity with Theatre/Costume MFA/MA.

    *** PLEASE NOTE: We are working on securing housing opportunity with our patrons for our artist but this is not a guarantee. Housing is paid to the patron by the designer and is between $350-$400 a month. We do not provide housing as part of the contract.
