A group of dedicated actors, actresses, assorted technicians, and other theatre lovers collectively known as the 'Company of Ten', were forced to leave their old 99-seat Abbey Mill Theatre, near the lake at Verulam in the mid sixties. Founded in 1934 by 10 young amateur thespians, among them our late president, Terry Newell, The 'Company of Ten' had never had a permanent home. The time had come to change this and you can read the fascinating history of how the first purpose-built theatre in St Albans since Roman times came about in Terry's 'Ten of the Best' and Gerald Sanctuary's "A Theatre for St Albans".
