Arden School of Theatre

  • About
In 1991 South Manchester College (now City College Manchester) and Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre founded The Arden School of Theatre. They aimed to create a vocational actor-training programme in the Northwest to train actors to nationally recognised standards. The Royal Exchange Theatre's involvement ensured constant contact between the School and the best professional practice. Since that time, a much larger Theatre Advisory Board has taken over from the Royal Exchange. The Board has an impressive array of Northwest-based theatre practitioners who help the School to stay in touch with the realities of the theatre profession. We teach these same realities to our students. The Arden trains professional theatre practitioners: actors, musicians, technicians, designers and stage mangers.

We are proud to have created one of Britain's first actor training programmes with degree status. After establishing the Acting Studies course, we established the Stage Design and Management Studies programme, which produced technicians, designers and stage managers of distinction.

The next addition to the Arden portfolio was its Musical Theatre Studies programme, which trained actors who wished to specialise in musical theatre.

However most recently the School has brought all of its BA programmes under one banner - the programme is called Professional Stage Practice, and enables students to train in any of the key areas of the profession (light, sound, wardrobe, make-up, acting, musical theatre, stage management or design) This programme provides tremendous flexibility but also solid and highly intense professional training.

Guaranteeing the quality this BA programme is its validation by the prestigious University of Manchester, with which the School continues to enjoy a long a fruitful partnership. The University also validates the School's innovative Postgraduate Diploma in Writing for Performance. This programme is unique because it is the only writing for performance programme that trains writers within an environment where the writers experience the effect of actors, directors, designers throughout the their studies.

However the School also offers a new suite of 2-year Foundation degrees validated by Manchester Metropolitan University. Yet another excellent collaboration that ensures the programmes offer the very best in vocational education. These programmes, in Technical Event Management and Operations and Contemporary Theatre Practice, offer opportunities for those already working in the industry to achieve academic recognition for their existing skills. Yet they also offer industry-based training for those who are not currently working in the profession, but who wish to.

Whatever your interest in the theatre and its allied industries, The Arden is an excellent choice: we offer a blend of up-to-date professional practice with educational quality.
