The Crescent Arts Centre has been in existence since 1980. It is situated in the Queens conservation area in the former Victoria College, a beautiful old historic building of sandstone dating back to 1874.
We offer a diverse selection of classes and workshops in music; dance & movement; visual arts; verbal arts; which are held throughout three seasonal terms (September to December, January to March and May to June). Our outreach programme develops and maintains working partnerships with and within the community. We also run two annual festivals: The midsummer dance festival City Dance and the Crescent literary festival Between the Lines. The Centre has a wonderful resource of many different sized rooms which play host not only to our programme of events but also to a number of arts related residents, including The Fenderesky Gallery. Several rooms are also available for hire.
The Crescent Arts Centre's primary aims are:
* To enable access for all the community to participate in the arts, actively and as an audience
* To encourage the conception, production and promotion of the arts to the highest level
* To enable participation and a sense of personal achievement in artistic endeavour by everyone.
The Centre is at 2-4 University Road on a main thoroughfare for both traffic and pedestrians making their way throughout the city - within easy reach of Stranmillis/ Malone Road area, Queen's University, Queen's Film Theatre, Ulster Museum, Lyric Theatre, Botanic Railway Station, Virgin Cinemas. A host of eating establishments are all within two minutes walk, and we are within all Citybus southbound Inner-zone limits. On-street parking is available in the immediate area and several car parks are sited just off Botanic Avenue.
The first phase of a refurbishment plan was completed on the top floor of the Centre in 1991. The Crescent board and staff are working hard to secure funding for a complete refurbishment. This will enable more people to access the many and varied facilities whilst retaining the beauty and history of this listed building. At present disabled access is only available on the ground floor with toilet facilities also provided. Full access is guaranteed after the refurbishment.
