SCOTTISH YOUTH THEATRE was founded in Edinburgh in December 1976 and Gareth Wardell, a lecturer in drama at Moray House College of Education, was the first Artistic Director.
The official launch of SCOTTISH YOUTH THEATRE took place on 26th April 1977, when details of the first year’s auditions and productions were released. The aim of the new company was ‘to provide young people in Scotland with an opportunity to pursue theatrical excellence by participating in a youth theatre run by professionals’.
Scottish Youth Theatre is the perfect name for our organisation – it describes who we are and what we do. SCOTTISH – operating throughout Scotland, proud of our nation’s heritage and achievements, and advocating Scotland, its culture and its people, to the rest of the world. YOUTH – working ‘for & by’ children and young people aged 3 –25, addressing the issues of young people and assisting professionals in their work with children and young people. THEATRE – enabling, stimulating and providing opportunities to explore and reach creative potential through a quality theatre arts experience.
