St Bartholomew's Church

  • About
St Barts has a very strong musical tradition, and we are one of the host venues for the annual Sydenham Arts Festival. We have many features that are interesting to lovers of church architecture and of art. The architect was Louis Vulliamy and we have what we believe to be one of only two clock mechanisms left made by his brother Benjamin Vulliamy, clock maker to the Crown. The church was painted by Camille Pissarro in 1871 and his painting, 'The Avenue', hangs in the National Gallery.
A beautiful collection of stained glass windows and a Cosmatic mosaic pavement are complemented by an arts and crafts reredos by Henry Wilson and the organ was built by William Hill & Sons.
We are available for hire for concerts and our Church Hall is also highly used as a venue for classes and parties.
Sydenham also has a civic society whose purpose is to give the community a voice on local issues, and there is a separate community website.
