Redroofs acquired The Old Picture House at Sunninghill in 1987. Following an immense rebuilding project, the dilapidated cinema space was dramatically transformed and reopened to the public in Autumn 1988.
The traditional proscenium style 160-seater theatre features many painted portraits of characters from past productions around the auditorium, the work of its resident set designer Alan Schofield and is well worth a visit!
The theatre is primarily a theatre for children and young people and has a regular following of public, schools and birthday parties where children meet the actors after the show. Audience participation is a feature of many of our shows.
A highlight of the year is the annual pantomime with supporting cast played by children and older students from Redroofs Theatre School and College. The Company stages well-known productions, mostly musicals, and also new work.
The theatre is also used as a facility of the school. It hosts the School Vocational Assessments (open to parents of pupils only); school productions, performance events and competitions.
It also provides an outstanding performance space for full-scale student productions and past productions have included The Taming of The Shrew, Kennedy’s Children, Devastation (new commission), The Heiress, A Slice of Saturday Night and many others.
