Tony Award nominations 2018 – Spongebob Squarepants and Mean Girls musicals lead with 12 nods each
The Tony Awards nominations for 2018 have been revealed, with SpongeBob Squarepants and Mean Girls proving themselves frontrunners by swiping a whopping 12 gong nods each, including for Best Musical. Close behind with 11 nominations are Angels in America, The Band's Visit and Carousel. Angels in America is now the most-nominated play in Broadway Tony history.
The recipients of the two Special Tony Awards were also announced. This year, the honours will go to rock legend Bruce Springsteen for Springsteen on Broadway and actor and stand up comedian John Leguizamo for Latin History for Morons.
Nominees were announced this morning (May 1) by former Tony-winning Hamilton actor Leslie Odom Jr. and American Idol star Katharine McPhee who debuted as the lead in Waitress on Broadway this year.
The 72nd annual Tony Awards takes place on June 10 at Radio City Music Hall in New York, US, and will be hosted by singer-songwriter-actors Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban.
