About me
Actor Robert McLanachan was born on July 14th 1963 in Greenford Middlesex England to Margaret a school cook and Thomas a maintenance fitter working at Technicolor. He is the third of four children and is of Scottish and Lithuanian origin.Growing up in the 1960s, film and cinema were a big part of his life and Technicolor employees were encouraged to bring their children to the factory at Christmas to watch their latest productions.
He performed regularly in school plays where he was introduced to Shakespeare and Ben Jonson and also performed in the orchestra. He gained ‘O’ levels in English Language and English Literature as well as five other subjects.
On leaving school he wanted to become a rock drummer but ended up working as a bricklayer. Never being happy at this he took a year off to study photography and later at 30 gave up completely and went to university.
At the University of Westminster he obtained a B.A. in Social Science then went on to The College of Law to take a Postgraduate Diploma in Law. He then went on to work in the legal profession for some years.
During his recovery following an illness he was reintroduced to acting by Paddy Navin. He joined the Young Vic Two Boroughs Project where he wrote and performed several plays then after courses at Morley College progressed to regular fringe theatre productions.
In his stage debut he played Charles Condomine in Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. He then went on to play Anton Chekhov in Niel Simon’s The Good Doctor, King Creon in Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, Lord Windermere in Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan, Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and more recently Oronte in Moliere’s The Misanthrope.
During the covid years he switched from theatre to performances on zoom, playing in two Jane Austin productions as John Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility and George Knightly in Emma. During this period he also had a spell as a gameshow host.
To date he has performed in fringe productions of over 30 plays and worked as an S.A. in over 40 full length feature films as well as numerous TV productions, adverts and in-house training films.
Performances have also included historical re-enactment where he took a keen lead in the educational side, entertaining the public with his knowledge of medieval history as well as competing in the combat. Many of the costumes, armour and historical artifacts he reproduced himself.
On more than a few occasions he has impress with his ingenious construction of stage props and designed the set for an improv show at the Young Vic.
