After writing and performing music as pianist and composer for the (Time Out Critic's Choice 4 Star) Instant Classics production of 'It's All True' by Jason Sherman, directed by David Cottis (White Bear Theatre), I am arranging my original music for the new Jazz Musical 'Alma' written by David Cottis.
http://rhosygilwen.co.uk/events/alma-theatre/
I also composed & arranged music & lyrics for the video 'Vaccinate' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-bnEShIURo at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Trust, following several recent composing and performing commissions including 2 CDs for large jazz/world music ensembles in music, song and spoken word.
Objective
I specialise in combining music and words, as musician/composer/arranger/musical director, (and author), and am looking to offer my skills to theatre productions and directors with an interest in animating text and stagings with live musical performance (and recorded compositions).
Selected Portfolio
Theatre includes 'It's All True' (White Bear Theatre), 'Writers of Little Venice' (Little Venice Festival), 'O O O O That Shakespeherian Rag' (TS Eliot Festival), 'The Bishop and the Cobbler' (Paines Plough) with Adrian Mitchell and Stephen Warbeck.
Music Commissions include composing and performing 'Life Cycles' (Royal College of Music), 'Little Gidding - A Place In and Out of Time' (TS Eliot Festival), Plaza Jazz People (Maida Hill Plaza, City of Westminster), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5osT0wpTYw 'The Journey' (Libretto) - A Nitro at the Opera (Royal Opera House).
CDs include 'Life Cycles' (Time Loves Changes Octet with Christine Tobin and Alec Dankworth, TLC002 2010), 'Little Gidding - A Place In and Out of Time' (Time Loves Changes Sextet with Alec Dankworth and Paul Clarvis, TLC001 2008).
Television includes Author of 'The Compartment' (BBC1), 'It's Childsplay' (BBC1 with Morecambe and Wise).
Press Reviews
for 'It's All True'
"My performance of the night goes to the distractingly good Jonathan Cohen who, as well as composing the score, played each note on his piano, providing a backing track to each sarcastic phrase and lustful gaze. As Adele showed at the Brits in 2011, sometimes all you need is a piano and some talent. The seemingly effortless pianist decorated this dance of a show with melodies that wouldn't have felt out of place in a thespian wine bar in Soho, where the moods are dramatic whether it's an affair, a conversation or the risk of a show shutting down hanging in the air. I'll be looking out for him in the future."

"Jonathan Cohen at the piano provides a consistent and crucial backdrop to events" (Vanessa Bunn, Extra!Extra!, Aug. '12)

"The atmosphere of depression-era America is ably expressed by Jonathan Cohen's music, played on an old upright piano, which provides an incidental soundtrack as well as accompaniment for the songs sung in rehearsal scenes." (Dave Jordan, What's On Stage, Aug. '12)
