About me
Since 1982 I have been working within performing arts, firstly as a performer then as a technician. My career started with semi pro bands and after a number of years hard work was rewarded with a record deal, ending up as a backing musician for Dee Dee Ramone formerly of legendary New York punks The Ramones. In 1992 I withdrew from the music industry to spend more time with my young children. I became a full time father whilst my partner developed her career. Whilst still taking a keen interest in music and music technology I took a part time course at the Manchester School of Sound Recording and attained a diploma. I returned to work as a technician in 1996.From 1996 until the end of 2002 I worked as a freelance technician, most extensively with P .A. and stage companies. My main experiences have been to rig and operate P. A. systems and build stages as part of a team on a range of events ranging from school choirs to name rock bands and raves. I also have experience of set building for conference work, provided technical support for large street theatre festivals and toured almost constantly for two years with a tribute band where I have largely had to organise my own workloads and work on my own initiative. Over the years I have picked up experience of rigging and operating small and large sound and lighting rigs, road and stage management, van/lorry driving, occasional press officer and generally looking after the needs of the band and equipment. Having been a performer helped me understand the needs of the artist.
Having always had an interest in theatre crafts I took a place at The Arden School of Theatre in Manchester in 2002 to study for a degree(B.A.Hons) in Performance Design and Management, with a view to broadening my knowledge. The course covered four core areas, Lighting design, Sound design, Set design and Stage Management. Having attained a generally understanding of these disciplines and contributing to all areas of design I chose to specialised in sound in my second year. I attained experience of working within theatre, as assistant, co-designer, designer and head of department. I not only learnt and understood the practical skills of design, but also the managerial skills involved with leading a department and handling budgets, staff and deadlines and have artistically contributed to the realisation of several productions by using effective communication and organisation skills. Whilst at college I carried on working freelance, when possible, for Manchester Light and Stage, Buxton Opera House and others. The work at Buxton Opera house was particularly rewarding as it gave me much needed experience of working within a busy theatre environment.
After graduating in September 2005 I worked for City College Manchester (now Manchester College) as senior technician/demonstrator in their 150 seat venue, The Waterside, on the Sheena Simon campus. I oversaw the day to day running of the theatre, providing technical support for the many and varied users, which ranged from young school leavers, to degree level students and professional theatre practitioners. Also I demonstrated technical equipment to students and instructed them on the safe use of the theatre space and health and safety issues. Since January 2008 I have been employed by Manchester Metroploitan University in a similar position at their Alsager and Crewe campus. Along side this I have also worked as a free lance sound designer and lecturer for The Arden School of Theatre, facilitating their performance design students with their assignments, which range from classic to contemporary theatre. These assignments are not always within the setting of a conventional theatre and I have experience of, both as a student and a professional, working in unusual locations. In 2009 I set up an acting school for children in Buxton, where we teach acting skills to children between the ages of 11 and 18. The school has been steadily growing in numbers ever since. I have also taken the opportunity to attain further skills by attending courses on PAT testing, fire safety and the correct and safe use and construction of tallescopes and towers.
I have the ability to work to deadlines and under pressure, both as part of a team and as an individual, having an excellent record of attendance and punctuality. As a team player I am always willing to help out in any area where needed and always eager to learn new skills. I am reliable, hard working, focussed and responsible, used to heavy lifting, heights and unsociable hours. I am computer literate, have a full clean driving licence and have experience of driving vans, mini buses and lorries up to 7.5 ton. My life experiences have always taken into account the needs of others and I therefore fully support the principles of equal opportunities and have no prejudices against minority groups based on colour, religion, sex, sexuality, ability etc.
I have four wonderful children and in my spare time I immerse my self in my family. I enthusiastically engage in their hobbies and interests which include rap/rock music, arts and crafts, wildlife, the environment and ecology, fantasy role playing games/sci-fi, learning musical instruments, geology/astronomy, dancing/acting and foreign travel/culture. When I do get some spare time to myself I enjoy walking the peak district with my partner and reading.
