I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2011 with a Fashion Design BA, but have since decided to pursue a career in costume design. The course has equipped me with an extremely high standard of pattern cutting, construction and design. I also have hands-on knowledge of traditional millinery techniques and lost-wax casting. I am also fully competent with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, Powerpoint and Excel, and also with 35mm analogue and DSLR photography.
I have recently completed design and manufacture of costumes for performance artists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich, who are curating an Art Lending Library in collaboration with the Market Gallery in Glasgow. http://www.artlendinglibrary.org.uk/artlendinglibrary/
In October 2011 I completed a Wardrobe Assistant internship at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. The Salon Project was an immersive theatrical experience where the entire audience was dressed every night in accurate Belle Epoque costume. In addition to the organizational skills required, I discussed both the theatrical histories of the individual garment or outfit with the audience member being dressed, and also social and historical rules and meaning of the garment in its original period. Between productions I was fully involved with the pressing, laundering and repairing of the sixty to seventy costumes used in the production. http://www.untitledprojects.co.uk/projects/The-Salon-Project
In the Summer of 2010 I interned as a Design Assistant at And Beyond. My responsibilities at this Amsterdam-based fashion label involved pattern cutting, toile and arment manufacture requiring machine and hand sewing, assisting on photoshoots, liasing with PR companies and undertaking self-directed research on a broad range of themes, in addition to standard studio tasks and upkeep.
Before moving to London I undertook voluntary costume design and sourcing for a variety of independent theatrical productions, short films and television pilots.
I am free Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays every week. You can see examples of my work at http://emmaclifton.tumblr.com
