THE BIRDER is a political allegory told through the visions of a nightmare. Somewhere in a nameless country, at some unspecified time, citizens of an all-powerful authoritarian state must pick sides—Will they conform or resist? The stage is set when our hero, a mild-mannered school teacher and birdwatching enthusiast, I, out for his morning hike, stumbles upon an exciting scientific discovery—a new species of bird! In I’s attempts to track down and catalog the animal, however, he is repeatedly warned to stop his investigation. Tormented by a fierce series of intimidations, someone does not want I snooping where he does not belong and will do anything necessary to stop him.
