About me
I made my professional theatre debut at 19 as the young Spanish freedom fighter José in the Midlands Arts Centre's 2008 production of Howard Goodall's Days of Hope (directed by Iqbal Kahn) and appeared in numerous stage productions both professional and amateur during the rest of my time at University. On graduating from the University of Birmingham in 2010 with a 2:1 in Drama and Theatre Arts I initially began working as a technician in corporate events, something I did full time for two years and then on a freelance basis from 2013. For financial security I took a full time job on the railway between 2014 and 2018 which further delayed my return to performing. On leaving the railway in 2018 I used my artistic network to gain casual work as a duty technician across several London theatres as a way of getting back into the industry as a ‘day job’. I simultaneously began working with actor and voice coach Peter Warnock to harness my vocal skills and to record some demo reels. We worked together on and off through to 2019 which culminated in me finally joining Equity at the end of 2019 and the Actor's Centre and the beginning of 2020, which with hindsight was poorly timed.
During lockdown I remained active with my Equity branch online and attended countless online zoom workshops - run by a variety of practitioners including the likes of Andy St John and Craig Van Ness. Post Covid I have enjoyed returning to in person workshops with Joe Hill Gibbons, Richard Evans CDG and Camilla Laxton providing particularly informative and engaging experiences. I also have a workshop lined up with Video Game Voice Director Randall Ryan.
My voice qualities, as determined in my time with Peter Warnock, are charming, positive, upbeat, trustworthy, commanding and warm but my greatest strength lies in my versatility. My natural speaking voice is close to RP with northern intonations, having been born in Greater Manchester but growing up mostly in the south east. I have a strong ear for accents and am adaptable, which means I’m able to pick up new ones for specific roles quickly and convincingly.
As a stage actor I would class myself as an old fashioned character actor, much like my father was before me. I love nothing more than digging deep into the psyche of another living being the further from me the better - and despite my academic background I relate enormously to the Craig Macdonald quote: “The best acting is instinctive. It’s not intellectual, it’s not mechanical, it’s instinctive.”
I have worked both under my real name (Will J L Howells) and a previous stage name (James Davenport).
