About me
'Her natural instincts, sensitivity, command of the stage, and her desire to keep growing as an Artist are inspirational.' Jennifer Gelfer (Director Beverly Hills Playhouse, New York.)Alongside acting in theatre and film, I also write and create performances drawing on a combined theatre, dance and visual arts background. Whether it's a script-based piece, interactive installation, costumed poetry performance or immersive video space, I invite people to explore, question and respond. While some projects are solo pieces, I also work collaboratively, and often include the public, or audience in the process or the work itself.
From the National Theatre Watch This Space Festival to the Whitechapel Gallery, Southwark Playhouse to the streets of Brazil, I hope to make theatre that encourages integration, questions boundaries, and makes people think creatively.
While in Brazil, I also spent some time working with two leading theatre and dance companies in Rio de Janeiro - Teatro Muinicipal Rio de Janeiro and Esther Weitzman Compania de Dansa.
Much of my writing plays with cultural difference and language cross-over. Featured performances have included at the Latitude Festival, Southbank Centre, Jazz Cafe, and West London Literary Festival and the Venezuelan Embassy's Bolivar Hall.
Having recently had a poem selected for publication in the anthology 'In Protest', compiled by Human Rights Consortium and Keats House Museum, I'm honoured to have won an award from Spread The Word and shall be reading at the Bloomsbury Festival this October for the launch.
Other publications include in the London Poetry Pearl Anthology, Daydream Magazine (launched at Saatchi and Saatchi), Bulb (global issues youth magazine), and an invitation to contribute to '100' (a book to inspire young people across all professional fields.)
I am currently in the process of writing and devising my first full-length play, I'll be sharing a fifteen minute work-in-progress piece exploring some of my ideas at the 2013 CASA Latin American Theatre Festival as one of the five selected artists/companies in residence. Though I've devised shows collaboratively, and also written two short plays for others to perform, this is a totally new and exciting experience!
Additional skills:
Fluent Brazilian Portugese and basic Italian speaking with a good ear for languages. I also speak a little Spanish and have performed in several accents including Amercian, Algerian and Farsi.
Dance trained (Esther Weizman Compania de Dansa, The Place, I.S.T.D, R.A.D) I worked as a dancer until 2006 with performances at the Barbican, Royal Opera House and as a leader for 'The Big Dance', teaching choreography to 700 people, recorded live for BBC radio and television.
For work as an arts facilitator, please contact me directly. I also develop some of my performance and installation projects for educational workshops or development and research events, including commissions for The National Summit on Participatory Arts (ICA), the Praxis Festival (V&A's Museum of Childhood) and the GLA's Design For London.
At the 2013 Platforma Conference I will be co-running a workshop - 'Ssshhh… Silence: its role and nature in the context of (dis)placement' - and also presenting my upcoming interactive installation – ‘The Garden of (In)Silencio.’
One of the short plays I wrote dealt with human trafficking, and was performed at the Broadway Theatre as part of 'Spin the Election' Festival. Other projects dealing with human rights issues have included a commission to write and perform in Trafalgar Square on World Press Freedom Day, organised by Amnesty International, Equity and PEN.

Reviews of my own writing/projects:
'Camila's work speaks of mischievousness, attention to detail & fantastic showladyship... breathtaking. Experiencing one of her performances is a true immersive pleasure. Her pieces explore the cross over of theatre, live art, spoken word, intervention and sculpture with the curiosity and bravery of Alice as she heads down the rabbit hole wondering where it will take her.' - Sarah Grainger-Jones & Lili Spain, curators of the Red Velvet Curtain Cult.
'… Her understanding of language, storytelling, and pace, the depth of content, the glittering poetry of wordplay and the underpinning factor that she remains totally convincing in her character, is why it succeeds as it does… A joy of theatricality, brought to life with utter clarity and artistic intelligence.' - David Edwards, Manchester Music.
'Dear God. Read this. Brilliant.' - Ruth McCarthy, Author, editor and founder of Think It Through.
'Out there trying new things, a pioneer, and who said pioneering was easy...if it were we would be all doing it. Her poetry is intimate, observing and honest. Wonderfully distinctive.' - Dr Kate Maguire, Author.
