About me

William is a director, writer, lighting designer from Tampa Bay, Florida. Following a BA in Theatre Arts with a focus on directing at University of South Florida, William worked for several years in television, and as a theatre and live event mercenary under his own banner as well as through various theatre organisations and event companies. Now in London, William is pursuing an MA in Advanced Theatre Practice at Central School of Speech and Drama. Of particular interest to him are intuitive, interactive forms of theatre which engage the audience with the work as creative collaborator rather than as passive spectator.

In the many gigs and shows I have worked on as independent contractor and as full-time employee with the various companies (Home Shopping Network, Styx, Thirty Seconds to Mars, [email protected], Kanye West, Dennis D. Young, Busch Gardens Florida, etc) I have had to be a personable, versatile, hard-working and knowledgeable member of the team. I have had to be a cheerful and willing subordinate as well as a team leader. I have had to have both my personal and my technical skill up to cracking level. I have worked in situations where conditions varied from having to improvise by finding common household lighting fixtures and making them work in a theatrical context (very poor theatre) all the way up to multi-million dollar productions working with the absolute cutting edge equipment (Vari * Light, Color Kinetics, Strand, Martin, ETC). My skill range has had to run the gammot, I have put my hands on and learned inside-and-out just about every piece of lighting equipment in use in the industry in a hard-knuckled field where a lot of people talk big but it's easy to spot a poser, and you're only as good as your last job. I work hard, I know what I'm doing, and when I don't, I ask questions. I've had to sell myself as a designer, a producer and a director, as well as in situations where as gig leader I had to liaise with clients, so I'm not someone who will embarrass the organization should circumstances require my presence in front of house. I am a skilled draftsmen working in VectorWorks, both 2D plots as well as highly detailed build-plans, and 3D visualizations of sets and lighting, with samples of my work available upon request.
