Bruvvers have been taking popular theatre to the community for more than 35 years. We’re based in Newcastle upon Tyne in North-East England, giving approximately 250 performances per year and playing to more than 40,000 people. Over the years, we estimate that more than a million people have seen a Bruvvers show! We’re an ensemble company with at least three plays in repertoire at any one time.

Bruvvers’ work is aimed at the whole community, from the very youngest up to the elderly, and everyone in between. We produce four or five shows each year, including one aimed at the very young, and our famous Christmas pantomime. Our shows combine exciting stories with music, song and action suitable for all the family; we also help with workshops, festivals, conferences, teaching, enabling and passing on skills to all age ranges, but especially the disadvantaged inner-city dweller. Our audience is made up of people who would not normally be able to participate in any other theatrical or artistic event.

The performances take place in schools, community centres, nurseries, youth clubs, playscheme sites, pubs, clubs, village halls, church halls, day-centres, sheltered accommodation, care homes, hospitals, colleges - in fact, any space where an audience can gather. Bruvvers' shows are infinitely adaptable.

Our ‘house style’ is in-the-round, where the audience sit on all four sides of the action.

The company is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, but we traditionally tour to the whole of Tyneside with occasional forays to Wearside, Cleveland, Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria. We make regular visits to national and international festivals, including the Prague Fringe.

Behind a nondescript wall on Lime Street, the Round is slowly taking shape. The latest theatre in the North-East will seat 180 people in-the-round, and comes kitted out with dressing rooms, a café-bar, office space and a soaring glass-roofed atrium. Slotting neatly into a triangular courtyard in the middle of 36 Lime Street, the theatre is a major part of the regeneration of the Ouseburn Valley. It will be the only theatre-in-the-round in the North-East, and the only theatre specialising in work for young people in the North of England.

Groundbreaking began on Monday January 23rd, and the site is a hive of activity. The builders, Craven Smith Ltd, are working alongside architect Malcolm Newton to realise Bruvvers’ long-held dream. The foundations have been laid, and steelwork has been fitted to create the four floors of the venue. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2007, and the theatre will open for previews soon after.

Sponsors for the project include the TyneWear Partnership, Newcastle City Council, Arts Council England, the Northern Rock Foundation, Away With The Fog Ltd, the Banks Community Fund, the Hadrian Trust and the Shears Foundation, as well as our generous Friends and supporters. £647,350 has been raised already, and the remainder is expected in the next few months.

The Round isn’t just a building – it’s also a home base for Bruvvers to rehearse and perform when not on the road. It’s a fun and unpretentious place for young people to discover the delights of live theatre, and for audiences of all ages to enjoy the best of British and international theatre. It’s the place to watch drama, music, comedy, cabaret, magic, storytelling, workshops, community events, and of course Bruvvers’ famous Christmas pantomime!
