Shotgun Theatre's conception, as so many do, started with a pint in RAM beer garden in June 2010. As Rob Emmett and Dan Tovey passed the hours in between rehearsals for the music department's production of ‘West Side Story’, the pair decided that Exeter needed more opportunities to perform theatre. With Dan putting in the elbow grease over the summer, Shotgun was born: an inclusive musical company all about having great fun and performing eclectic shows. The name came about as it alluded to the malfunctioning of the prop gun in the final night of the 2010 'West Side Story' (it didn’t go off, and Tony & Maria were left just calling out to each other until the drummer finally snapped and hit something hard…).

In May of 2011, Shotgun sold out it's first show: Batboy. It was the first use of Kay House as a performance space, which has since become our second home. Growing in strength and professionalism year on year, we have managed to put on more and more ambitious shows, and in 2014 moved into a professional venue for the first time with Spring Awakening. We were thrilled to receive an invitation to perform the show at the 2014 National Student Drama Festival, where we picked up awards for Best Musical, Best Newcomer Director and Best Actor Commendation.

Importantly, Shotgun's shows are voted for and chosen by our members, and we pride ourselves on performing shows that most won't have heard of, as well as showcasing members' writing talents. We also host regular unauditioned workshops, cabarets & socials to allow everyone and anyone to get involved.
