About me
I have worked in the film industry since the early 1980’s, starting as a camera assistant and working my way up through the camera department grades to my current post as Director of Photography. In terms of technology, I started my career working with 16mm film on documentaries and have most recently been shooting continuing drama for the BBC and ITV, currently working on Coronation Street and Eastenders. Even though the technology has changed dramatically during my 30 year career, the fundamental craft of Lighting and Operating cameras for TV and Film hasn't and with my recent freelance teaching experience it has been very rewarding passing on my knowledge. I have been very fortunate to have worked with some highly talented directors, actors, producers and DOPs including Peter Cattaneo, Charlie Creighton, John Cleese, Graham Garden, Sir Peter Hall, Sir Anthony Jay, Remi Adefarasin, Douglas Slocombe, John de Boorman to name but a few and one of the most important lessons my experience has taught me is that no matter what technology is involved, it is always about telling a story or expressing an idea through a lens.
I have worked on commercials, features, tv dramas and documentaries and have experience in using all types of professional film and video cameras. I have recently been trained to use television gallery lighting desks and software for multi camera filming in continuous drama.
I have recently been employed on a freelance basis as a Lecturer at the MET film school in Ealing west London. The courses I have taught are Image & Sound Level 1, Image & Sound Level 5 Episodic and Factual as well as Cinematography Level 6. I have also been marking students’ work as part of their BA course.
I have worked with the BBC training department on their Directing Single Camera Drama Courses at Elstree studios, as well as mentoring numerous aspiring cameramen. I have been told by students I’ve taught and apprentices I’ve trained that I have inspired them.
