About me
I am a film and television graduate from Warwick University looking to start my career within the creative industries. I am a highly motivated, driven and determined individual who looks to excel in every aspect of my life. From my studies, previous careers, and hobbies I have always pushed myself above and beyond what is expected of me. This is an attitude that has been heavily associated with my character by previous employers, peers, and family. An attitude I will be bringing into the start of my career in the creative world.Additional information:
Patience, perseverance, and sacrifices are all things that have been told to me that someone needs to possess to be successful in the creative industry and they are things I am willing to give to ensure my aspirations flourish. While others fear the challenge to succeed in the film and television industry, I thrive in the possibilities of success. I am someone with a relentless hunger to get everything out of life and to leave no stone unturned. This has been an ethos that has grown within me ever since I realised the importance of following your passions within life. When I was at school, I was brought into the idea that STEM subjects were paramount to a meaningful career. I took all my GCSE subjects based of this ideology and when I finished school, I went on to study an advanced mechanical engineering apprenticeship at Jacobs Engineering Group.
It was here I realised there is more to life than doing a job that offers stability but not fulfilment. I spent a year looking into the ways to begin to follow my true passions in life which are film and television and educated myself upon the degree possibilities available to me in these fields. I came to the decison that once I had completed my HNC, NVQ and been awarded my mechanical designer title for the completion of my apprenticeship, I would leave the oil and gas industry to pursue a career in the creative industry. When the time came around I was offered a sponsored mechanical engineering degree by Jacobs with great benefits, but I knew this wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. So, I left Jacobs and the oil and gas industry to pursue my passions within film and television at Warwick University. It is here I took every opportunity to develop my skills and further my knowledge within the creative world. I became an Executive within the first six months at the University’s film society and my role was to oversee any productions requested to the society including short films, trailers for societies, filming events and much more. I created my own YouTube channel during this time (ellisnarey), where I posted any content I created of value to my page.
In my second year I took a production module called WIRED. Below is one of my short’s:
ACID TRIP - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2vjne9LCf0&t=3s
My short gained special recognition from my tutors and peers for its creativity, editing and uniqueness. Here, I began to discover that my strengths lied in production and my ability to visualise and bring to life my creative ideas through the moving image, using innovative and creative concepts to tell my stories. For example, my use of transitions was specifically picked up upon by my University tutors in ACID TRIP, where I utilised elevator doors to transition into a car park and in another of my shorts titled EXCHANGE, I used a mobile phone screen to transition into a park.
In my final year I was fortunate to land a place on the London Film School Module, a module in which only twelve students were selected to take part in. Within this module myself and my peers were taught by the London Film School tutors the art of script writing, directing, editing, cinematography and much more. Our end project was to write, direct, cast, produce and edit our own short films. I was very conscious that this was going to be my last film at the University, so I wanted to make sure that I did something big for it.

Much to the shock of both the London Film School and my tutor at Warwick University, I planned to film my short in the city of London. This took weeks of planning and preparation as I had to obtain documents like; public liability insurance, location permits for Trafalgar Square, St. James Park, China Town, Westminster Abbey and had to stick to strict filming regulations while in the city. There were also other obstacles that had to be overcome like the transportation of crew, ensuring locations were arrived to at specific times, dealing with last minute production problems which included the sudden absences of my sound operator and cinematographer and broken microphones. Despite these challenges, I always came up with fast, efficient, and calculated solutions to overcome them to ensure my film was successful. With the broken microphones it meant I could only rely on the boom to capture the sound. This meant that scenes had to be carefully timed to capture sound at specific moments when areas were particularly quite or had less ambience. A difficult challenge when you are shooting in central London. Likewise, with half my crew unable to attend I had to take up an additional role as a Sound Operator as well as Director. All the footage in London was captured by myself and one other crew member. A definite challenge but one we did successfully.
My last few months at Warwick University were cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic, putting a holt on my journey into the creative industry. With economic uncertainty and a UK lockdown on the go I looked for other ways to find fulfilment and utilize my spare time. This led me to enrol on another course in fitness and health. I am an amateur boxer who competes in boxing bouts, trains six times a week and follows a regimented diet and training plan. Alongside film and television, fitness and health is another huge passion in my life. Boxing over the years has taught me the art of discipline, how to handle stress and the ability to push my mind and body through difficult times. Since qualifying as a personal trainer, I have built a portfolio of clients who I help train and nutritionally guide. I also run my own social media fitness account where I create, edit and post daily workout videos and nutritional meals. In the last nine months I have created 200+ pieces of content for my page alone. This shows my personality traits to dedicate myself to the things I am passionate in. The competition of my apprenticeship, degree, PT courses, competitive boxing fights, YouTube channel, Instagram fitness page and fitness achievements are all evidence that I am individual committed to everything I apply my mind to.
I want nothing more than the chance to start my career in the creative industry. This has been something I have envisioned for nearly five years ever since I began to make the conscious decision for change. If given the opportunity I would be a highly driven, passionate, and motivated employee committed to all tasks of the job role. I am someone that is determined to create the future I always wished for when I decided to follow all my passions and aspirations in life.
