Chocolate Boxes

2013, 14 minutes

A period drama set during the Spanish civil war

Set against the backdrop of rural Yorkshire in the late 1930s, Chocolate Boxes follows the story of David as he struggles to come to terms with his own beliefs in a drastically changing world. In 1937 a civil war rages in Spain. It is more than an internal conflict of warring factions, though, and has become a calling card for sympathisers and revolutionaries from around the world to join up and fight with the Republican Army against a brutal Fascist force lead by General Franco. A thousand miles away in a small room at the back of a town hall, David and his friend Michael arrive late at a meeting being held by the passionate Jorge, a Spanish revolutionary recruiting English men to join up and fight. Michael's apathy is in stark contrast to the spark of interest that David shows, taken in by the powerful words of the dark stranger and in particular of the horrific tale of the fascist 'Chocolate Boxes', small explosive devices hidden inside the packets that blew the hands of small children. At his work and his home David tries to ignore his girlfriend Sylvia and his Boss Michael (Sylvia's brother) who are scared of what David plans to do. David is left with a decision to make: should he stay at home in the comfort of his family and friends, or should he leave to fight on a foreign batlefield for what he believes in.
