Defences

2013, 109 minutes

Defences is a cautionary tale. Beware who you f**k. Beware who you f**k with.

Abi, a young law student and aspiring rock singer falls in lust with her criminal law lecturer, Anne. An affair ensues. Abi's friends are fascinated. The law faculty is challenged. Abi's boyfriend, Matt is incensed - and nothing can quell his anger. Defences explores the passions that provoke, the passions that inspire love, the passions that fuel hatred, and the war within over whether to be ruled by your heart or your head. Defences also questions the current state of criminal law in Australia, USA and the UK, specifically the homosexual panic/ advance defence. This defence argues that a homosexual advance can constitute adequate provocation to kill or react with extreme violence and that an "ordinary person in the position of the accused" would act the same way. Defences argues that the ordinary person should know better.
