How soon does the night fall?

2017, 5 minutes

Myuran Sukumaran's 12 years in prison.

The film is heavily inspired by the Australian Myuran Sukumaran. His backstory is one that he comes from a christian background who unfortunately followed the wrong path when growing up. Sukumaran's story first caught the media's attention back in 2005 when he and a group of people, later referred to as 'The Bali 9' were caught in Indonesia for trying to smuggle drugs out of the country. He was tried and sentenced to death by firing squad in 2015. His story caused such global uproar as he had shown nothing but true rehabilitation being on death row. Our story, ‘How soon does night fall?’ takes place in one location, a corrupted prison cell in Asia. We decided that the story should be set in a ‘metaphorical prison’ rather than a literal prison with cream white walls and dramatic coloured lighting as we want the audience to feel enclosed and isolated by the surroundings just like Sukumaran may have felt. As this is an adaptation of Sukumaran’s story we have called our character ‘The Artist’. We want to capture Sukumaran’s true essence of the change in his nature throughout his 10 years of being on death row, as it appears in his interviews with various global TV networks that his mind set from back in 2005 has clearly changed before his final days back in 2015.
