The setting is County Meath, Southern Ireland, April, 1963. Cathal, a young Irish boy discovers a girl trespassing on his farm and believes that he has witnessed the appearance of the Virgin Mary. Cathal decides to protect the girl, but in doing so, brings trouble to himself and his family. The story is a classic coming-of-age fable about one boys search for salvation and hope. Cathal, son of a farmer, is part of a traditional Irish Catholic family. His mother died when he was only three years old, leaving his father to raise him alone. He is a shy boy who does not makes friends easily, living a lonely existence on his farm - meeting the girl in the barn becomes his salvation.
