Symantec Cyber Readiness Challenge

EDC and RKI are two of the world’s largest corporations – and the top-earning providers of satellite technology in the world.

EDC and RKI are two of the world’s largest corporations – and the top-earning providers of satellite technology in the world. EDC and RKI are also bitter rivals, with numerous feuds between the two having played out in the media over the past few years. Despite a string of failed launches of numerous rockets and satellites, RKI somehow manages to compete with EDC on financial terms. EDC claim this is because RKI are funded by black market trade activity and the sale of stolen data. This week, public unease has developed into outcry as rumours of an enormous data security breach at EDC spread via the press. EDC have an enormous presence in Barcelona, a show of strength following these allegations, which CEO Alex Lockwood vehemently denies. Also being reported are rumours of a shadowy department at EDC known only as ‘Project V’, the purpose of which is unknown. A group of hackers calling themselves ‘the ‘Free Orbit Society’, led by the mysterious figure “Corinth” have subjected EDC to a string of public humiliations for reasons unknown, even going so far as ‘Hijacking’ keynote speeches at the Visions conference to make accusations of corporate malpractice on the big screens. Despite the constant threats of the Free Orbit Society, the strongest plausible theory is that RKI are behind the hacking at EDC and are stealing corporate secrets. RKI stringently deny any involvement. Alex Lockwood has personally sent 10 specialist ‘recruiters’ to find the 200 best hackers at the Conference. The recruiters initially approach conference attendees in a friendly way, appearing to promote a number of mundane job openings at EDC, but soon the conversation takes a sinister turn – the rumours are true, and EDC is under attack. Worse than that, Project V is real, and Alex and her recruiters have come to the conference to recruit the world’s best InfoSec (Information Security) experts to find out who’s behind him. The recruiters direct people to a sign-up website where they can confirm their attendance to the Cybergames challenge – where they will compete with other conference guests to complete hacking objectives for Alex Lockwood and EDC. As the game progresses, several shock truths are uncovered. EDC and RKI are working together, with RKI channeling it’s black market profit into Project V – which turns out to be a satellite program designed to intercept transactions between foreign nation states. It also becomes clear that you (the recruiters) are actually a specially trained private security force, sent by EDC to prevent any of the recruits from escaping – using force if necessary. As the game nears it’s end, Corinth reveals himself – he is Giles Knox, former employee of EDC, who was sacked when he refused to support Project V. He reveals that EDC and RKI are actually about to frame the guests for the hackings. Players must then help Giles get revenge by exposing EDC, clearing their their own name before they are arrested.
